How can I attend one of your programs?
Unless specifically stated on the webpage for each program or event, our workshops and seminars are by application only. You can apply using the link from each page to our application form. Special requirements and eligibility will be listed on each program’s page as well as on the event’s application form.
Where can I find the application form?
Here is the link where you can apply to most of our programs when calls for entry are open:
First, you must register an account, then you may create an entry to a specific program. You can submit your entry to more than one program, but please tailor each submission to the program to which you are applying.
Who is eligible to attend one of your programs?
Eligibility is often determined by where you live and where you’re from; some of our programs are only open for photographers in specific regions. The VII Academy’s mission is to offer high quality education to emerging professionals and students on scholarship from the majority world and under represented communities in G20 countries. We encourage you to apply if you think you fall into our area of focus, but please be aware that if you’ve had access to photography education or have achieved success in your field already, you may not fit the criteria.
Is a photography portfolio required?
For most programs, yes, a portfolio of up to 30 images is required. You can upload a single story, multiple single images, or a combination. There is no minimum number of images required but it is recommended that you provide a minimum of ten images so that the selection team can evaluate your photographic and editing skills. For some programs, non-photographers who are working in the field of visual journalism or for whom understanding imagery better would help to further their career are also invited to apply. We are also willing to consider non-photographers who are motivated to learn new visual journalism skills to advance the cause of issues important to their own communities. In cases like these, for questions on what material to provide as a portfolio please contact [email protected]
How can I make my application stand out? What are the judges looking for?
While demonstrating need and a commitment to photography is crucial, the selection team also pays close attention to motivation. You should explain to them why you want to attend the workshop or program to which you’re applying; why the tutors are particularly interesting to you or why the location matters. You may be tempted to submit the same material multiple times for different programs, but you should carefully review what you’ve written to see if it applies to all, or whether it would be better explain your interest in each program more specifically.
Can I sponsor a student to attend a VII Academy program?
