Programs

VII Academy offers a wide vari­ety of dynam­ic and inten­sive edu­ca­tion­al expe­ri­ences in dif­fer­ent regions with a diverse group of pho­tog­ra­phers. These are offered com­plete­ly free to select­ed appli­cants, all of whom come from the major­i­ty world and under­rep­re­sent­ed com­mu­ni­ties in G20 coun­tries.

The VII Academy is tak­ing all its cours­es online for the fore­see­able future. We will resume res­i­den­tial cours­es at our cam­pus­es in Sarajevo and Arles and oth­er select loca­tions when the envi­ron­ment is safe to do so. Access to our long-term res­i­den­tial cours­es will be pri­or­i­tized for stu­dents who have passed through one of our online inter­ac­tive sem­i­nars.

Join Ali Arkady in this 12-week pro­gram that has been specif­i­cal­ly adapt­ed to work­ing in a COVID-19 envi­ron­ment. It will equip you with the nec­es­sary method­olog­i­cal and prac­ti­cal tools for the research and pro­duc­tion of pho­to essays suit­able for pub­li­ca­tion in an edi­to­r­i­al con­text. You’ll progress from the shoot­ing of sin­gle pic­tures to the con­struc­tion of short jour­nal­is­ti­cal­ly dri­ven pho­to essays, explor­ing the rel­e­vant tech­ni­cal, aes­thet­ic and jour­nal­is­tic aspects. The sem­i­nar will also address issues of ideas gen­er­a­tion, research, cap­tion writ­ing, and pic­ture edit­ing. You’ll be required to pro­duce an extend­ed, in depth body of pho­to­jour­nal­is­tic or doc­u­men­tary work that explores a sto­ry in detail.

Join Mary Gelman and Maciek Nabrdalik in this 12-week pro­gram that has been specif­i­cal­ly adapt­ed to work­ing in a COVID 19 envi­ron­ment. It aims to equip you with the nec­es­sary method­olog­i­cal and prac­ti­cal tools for the research and pro­duc­tion of pho­to essays suit­able for pub­li­ca­tion in an edi­to­r­i­al con­text. The VII Academy is pleased to sup­port four stu­dents with schol­ar­ships to attend this women-only work­shop, which focus­es on cul­ti­vat­ing your own authen­tic voice through nar­ra­tive and doc­u­men­tary prac­tice. From idea to pub­li­ca­tion, par­tic­i­pants will work on per­son­al pho­to­graph­ic projects that will be reviewed and cri­tiqued in an inter­ac­tive online envi­ron­ment by Nichole and Anush over a 10-week peri­od.

The VII Academy is pleased to offer schol­ar­ships to this work­shop, which is designed to help pho­tog­ra­phers and visu­al sto­ry­tellers under­stand the impor­tance of cre­at­ing a strong visu­al brand and iden­ti­ty. Each par­tic­i­pant will be able to leave this work­shop with a new web­site design and social media pres­ence. It’s geared to indi­vid­u­als inter­est­ed in under­stand­ing and improv­ing their brand vis­i­bil­i­ty whether in print­ed or dig­i­tal form.

The Original Masterclass with Stefano De Luigi & Maciek Nabrdalik

The VII Masterclass is one of the most ambi­tious and exhaus­tive train­ing pro­grams avail­able. BOLD Civic Engagement Workshop

Workshop | Sarajevo
The VII Academy with the sup­port of the US Embassy is run­ning a year long pro­gram in fact-based writ­ing, pho­tog­ra­phy, and mul­ti­me­dia sto­ry­telling, draw­ing par­tic­i­pants from men and women from all com­mu­ni­ties in Bosnia and Herzegovina to encour­age and improve civic dis­course. Some of the world’s lead­ing jour­nal­ists, aca­d­e­mics and pub­lic intel­lec­tu­als from Harvard University, Northeastern University and the VII Photo Agency will pro­vide insight, men­tor­ing and train­ing to tack­le the fraught and com­plex issues impor­tant to the diverse com­mu­ni­ties liv­ing in the Bosnia. The pro­gram empha­sizes an eth­i­cal, col­lab­o­ra­tive and par­tic­i­pa­to­ry approach to jour­nal­is­tic prac­tice and dia­logue. VII Academy Sarajevo in part­ner­ship with the US Embassy in Sarajevo will award a num­ber of grants in the amount of $30,000 to the best BOLD project pro­pos­als in 2020. We will be explor­ing what a fem­i­nine per­spec­tive means to women, what they bring in their art and why it is impor­tant for soci­ety as a whole.
